The story unfolds as Maomao becomes entangled in the affairs of the imperial court, solving medical mysteries, uncovering hidden dangers, and navigating a treacherous web of political intrigue. The palace, filled with consorts vying for favor, manipulative nobles, and deadly secrets, provides the perfect stage for Maomao’s unique brand of detective work.

Characters

Maomao – The Unconventional Heroine
One of the biggest strengths of The Apothecary Diaries is its protagonist, Maomao. Unlike the typical naïve or overly idealistic female leads in historical dramas, Maomao is blunt, highly intelligent, and fiercely independent. Her love for herbal medicine and poisons is almost obsessive, and she cares little for palace politics—until she is forced to engage with them. What makes her so compelling is that she isn’t a traditional beauty or someone who seeks influence. She is logical to a fault, often socially awkward, and brutally honest, which makes her stand out among the more delicate and scheming ladies of the court. Her interactions with Jinshi, in particular, are both amusing and intriguing, as she remains completely unimpressed by his ethereal beauty and charm.

Jinshi – The Enigmatic High-Ranking Eunuch
Jinshi is another captivating character. At first glance, he seems like a soft-spoken and graceful figure, but beneath his perfect exterior lies a mind just as sharp as Maomao’s. Unlike typical male leads who fall into clear categories of either “cold and distant” or “overbearingly affectionate,” Jinshi is enigmatic, playful, and highly influential within the palace. His growing fascination with Maomao adds an intriguing element of romance that remains subtle yet compelling.

The series introduces a variety of side characters, from imperial concubines and jealous maids to high-ranking officials, all of whom contribute to the court’s complexity. One of the most refreshing aspects of The Apothecary Diaries is how it seamlessly blends medical mysteries with palace intrigue. Each episode presents a new case—whether it’s a mysterious illness, poisoning, or a deadly scheme—keeping the audience engaged while slowly unraveling the grander story of the imperial court.

The pacing is well-balanced, with moments of tension, humor, and character growth woven into each episode. Unlike many other historical anime, which often get bogged down in heavy exposition, The Apothecary Diaries keeps its storytelling dynamic, allowing Maomao’s sharp observations to guide the audience through the complexities of court life.

Studio OLM and TOHO Animation have done an exceptional job bringing The Apothecary Diaries to life. The anime’s visual style is breathtaking, with detailed backgrounds, rich colors, and intricate palace designs that capture the grandeur of the imperial court.

Anime Episodes

My personal opinion

I personally find The Apothecary Diaries to be an incredibly enjoyable and engaging anime. It’s refreshing to watch a historical drama that doesn’t rely on overused clichés and instead focuses on a clever, independent protagonist who solves mysteries with her intelligence rather than brute force or charm. The palace intrigue is well-written, and every episode keeps me invested in the overarching story.

However, I do think that the heavy use of medical terminology makes it slightly difficult to follow at times. Not everyone is familiar with historical medicine, and the anime doesn’t always explain terms in a way that’s easily digestible for a casual audience. This makes me question the age rating of 14+ . While there isn’t excessive violence or explicit content, the complexity of the dialogue, the medical jargon, and the subtle political maneuvering make it more suitable for an older audience—perhaps 16+ would have been a better choice.

Despite this, I highly recommend The Apothecary Diaries to anyone who enjoys a well-paced, intelligent anime with rich world-building, fascinating characters, and stunning animation. It’s a show that doesn’t rely on action or exaggerated drama but instead captivates through intricate storytelling and strong character development.
